Why We All Need A Pantry

Kitchen Pantry

We all need a pantry to store food for the following reasons:-

  • We are constantly being told through the media that we need to stock up on food in case of an emergency. With the threats that we face of war in an increasingly tense political climate we can feel comforted that we have extra food in to feed our family. Having the extra storage space for cupboard food means that you can safely store emergency food without taking up the space of your kitchen cupboards. By adding one or two items each time you shop and putting them away in the pantry means you can grow your emergency supplies on a regular basis.
  • Global warming can result in food shortages with farmers land drying up or flooding which can spoil crops.
  • The technological threats that we face can result in shops closing as their data systems across a broad range of businesses. Although we have seen this happen for some hours only professional hacking could see systems down in physical shops and online shops go down for days on end.
  • Earthquakes can make roads inaccessible and prevent food being delivered to the shops.
  • Food prices have been increasing and are expected to continue to increase so having a pantry full of spare food can help save you money by buying in bulk and storing it in the pantry.
  • Having extra food in is handy for when extra guests turn up and the extra food helps take the pressure off you especially at Christmas time.

Just look how much food you can fit in a pantry in the image above which shows a pantry closed and the pantry open. This ivory matt white pantry has two doors that you can fill with food and drink with five shelves to each door and the main part of the pantry also has five shelves. You can adjust the shelves to suit. I would suggest placing heavier foods on the bottom shelfs in case children reach for them and drop them on their toes. This pantry is free-standing and has magnetic doors. It has an anti-tip kit so you can secure it to the wall if you want additional security to prevent young children from tugging at it. With a scratch-resistant finish and metal handles this pantry is ideal for extra cupboard space in a kitchen. The pantry measures width 60cms x diameter 40cms x height 120 cms. Buy on Amazon. What to Store in a Pantry

I would suggest storing longer-life food in a pantry such as:

  • Tinned fruit and vegetables, tinned meat like corned beef, tinned fish such as sardines and mackerel fillets, tuna and salmon. Tins of soup that are hearty. Choose all your tins with pull-open rings for easy access in an emergency.
  • Whole grain food, cereals, rice and pasta.
  • Nuts and seed that are nutritious and feeling.
  • Protein bars that contain nuts and raisins.
  • Dried fruit in bags such as mixed fruit, raisins, cherries.
  • Powdered milk or cartons of long-life milk.
  • Bars of chocolate and other long-life food your family likes to ensure you can offer food that you know your family like and will eat.
  • Bottled water, long-life orange juice and canned energy drinks.
  • Freeze dried food that you can prepare with little or no gas or electricity.
  • Think about what each family member likes to eat and add a little extra on your shopping list. There is not point in storing food that kids don’t like especially if they are very fussy eaters. Snacks are better than them eating nothing so apart from the staples store foodstuff that may not be very healthy but at least you know that it will get ate. Don’t forget to keep tabs on the use by date and use it up and replace the items as you go along. Store, use and replenish that way nothing will get wasted and you will have a continuous supply of food.

The large white farmhouse pantry above has 4 drawers, 6 cupboards, a tea/coffee station shelf, a charging station and LED lighting making it a very versatile and functional pantry. You can fit lots of food in the cupboards and store smaller food item in the drawers like little pots of jam. Store all the things you need in an emergency like a torch, batteries, a tin opener, tealight candles, a radio and such. There is a side shelf to add books or flowers, mugs or mobile devices. The X-panel doors give it a nice modern farmhouse feel. You can fit lots in this farmhouse pantry and surround yourself by it daily with the tea or coffee station whilst charging your mobile phone. It is like an extension of your existing kitchen. The LED lights will illuminate your station and bring elegance to your kitchen space. Can you just imagine walking into your kitchen in the morning and seeing this lit up and putting the kettle on or your coffee maker whilst admiring this very elegant pantry.
